If you’re lucky enough to be planning a vacation to Maui this summer, how will you decide where to stay? Nearby restaurants, nearby shops, or directly on the beach? If you are someone who enjoys long walks on the beach, you might consider a spot near the Kamaole beach parks in Kihei. The southernmost of the three beaches Kam (as they call them) is just across the street from the Kamaole Sands condominium complex, an ideal place to start a walk on the beach.

Kam I, Kam II, III and Kam, capes short distance between them, have long walks that are idyllic at any time of day, early morning, when you are the first footprints on the freshly washed sand at night when colors sunset reflecting off the water and wet sand at night when the moon shines above the water and lights your way.

From the north on Kam Kamaole Sands III, go under tables picnic in North Park, the beach, a place to go for a picnic lunch and sunset watching. The nose, between Kam Kam II and III is small and can be traversed by a short sandy path. Stay on the grass near the coast to the junction with the white gazebo, and follow the short path back to the beach.

The beach is always best to walk barefoot, of course, and the beaches of Maui are very safe for bare feet. When the shoes are known for the perfect shoe is what people call “slippers” (but most of us call flip-flop). This grassy area between the second and Kam Kam I is one of the best places on Maui to find turtles. Stop for a while “and examine the rocks near the base of the cliff, and it is likely to see a head arising curious look back at you. In the northern headland, another path leads to Kam I.

Kam I is twice as long as Kam-II a perfect crescent of sand about half a mile long. In the north, there is usually a few swimmers in the morning at certain times of the year, there may be a sharp fall off at high tide.

At a rapid pace, it takes about twenty minutes walk from the north end of Kamaole Sands Kam I. If you started early enough, you’ll be back at Kamaole Sands, or wherever you are traveling before the sun gets hot and high. If it is later in the day, take your time and take a bath when you want to refresh.

More work awaits as you head south of Kamaole Sands. By Kam III there is a path that follows the water and which mainly concern the location of Wailea. This tour can take two hours and includes a short stretch of road on foot, “slippers” are certainly needed. Walk to Wailea, swim, dine, and reverse, a nice way to spend a day in Maui. My favorite thing about staying at Kamaole Sands is a pleasure to walk on the beach, near the door of my building.
