If you have planning to travel to Costa Rica, reading my experiences may help you decide what to see and do while you’re there. My husband and I went at Christmas during a tour of 10 days in the group with the Caravan company, a provider of travel tour that has also guided tours of Mexico, Guatemala, Copper Canyon and the Canadian Rockies.

The tour began in San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica The hotel is modern and comfortable, with a great buffet (relatively) real food. Due to the tropical climate, local products of excellent quality are available all year, obviously grown on small farms, not giant factory farms common in North America. The local watermelon were the most delicious I have ever eaten, small (less than a foot in diameter) with bright red flesh is very sweet, totally different from California pale, bland, huge melons grown on a commercial scale and Mexico sold in the States. Rice and beans were served at almost every meal, but there was always a variety of dishes with spicy meat and spicy vegetarian. I’m not vegetarian, but I love vegetables, so I was really pleased with the menu, and was one of the highlights of the trip. Poor diet and home noise can really affect a turn, even if the scenery is great.

My last tour with motorhome, we went to Mexico, and the chicken was on the menu so often that to this day my husband will not eat. “All pollo’ed Out” is how he says. But this was not the case this time, so, obviously, even the same company visits, each visit is different, because the details are largely organized by local staff.

We have not spent much time in San Jose itself, just led through it on the road to local attractions. But I noticed the windows and barred spirals of barbed wire that surrounds almost every house and building, and two armed guards and outputs an appliance store, of all places. Faced with a bank, I could understand, but in a shop selling washing machines? The guide said that the local crime rate is extremely high. In Mexico, I saw some windows sealed, but some barbed wire. They said that theft is a problem throughout Latin America, and an acquaintance who has traveled extensively throughout the continent, he told me not to take anything of value, along my journey. However, even with this reservation, the view is really striking. I’m not used to that of all Canadian and United States, the Caribbean and even without such obvious problems. Despite the fact that Costa Rica is a trendy place for retirement for many gringos, this would really make me think twice before moving there.

Costa Rica is a volcanic region, and the tour group went to see two volcanoes, Poas Volcano and the Arenal volcano. The Poas Volcano was at a height, covered with a forest full of streaming clouds, fog halloween unlike anything I’ve seen elsewhere. The crater, which contains a bright green, a very acidic lake was barely visible due to foggy conditions, but the only way through the forest was worth itself.itself.

If you plan to hike into the rain forest, even on groomed trails, be sure to wear walking shoes, no sandals, and even long pants that can fit in these boots. I’m not joking when I make this recommendation: the floor of the rainforest is full of biting ants, two army ants and leafcutter ants, which have huge nests several feet in diameter. These ants bite really toxic, and I found this way, the evil that I and many others from the tour, sandals, and we did a dance to prevent insects from crawling shadow on our feet and bite us . However, I am left with a swollen ankle due to an ant, who had managed to hang on. I wonder how the local Indians who lived in the rainforest has treated this as they went barefoot all the time.

We also spent two days in Tortuguero preserve wildlife, a paradise for birdwatchers. He had all sorts of exotic birds including toucans. We also saw some small crocodiles, iguanas and various species of monkeys. Curiously, despite the rain forests, there are very few mosquitoes.
