Lanzarote is one of the seven Canary Islands – which are all owned by Spain even though they are located much closer to Africa than Europe. Around 100 miles off the south west coast of Morocco.
The islands are one of the most popular holiday destinations in the country – thanks to the fact that they enjoy great weather all year round and boast excellent accommodation. With visitors able to enjoy a day on the beach even during December, when temperatures still rise into the 20´s.
During the summer months the island is cooled by the Trade Winds – which encourage a lot of tourists from mainland Spain to visit. As the temperatures are more bearable on Lanzarote during these summer months than they are on the mainland.
Lanzarote´s largest tourist market is the UK – with British arrivals accounting for around 50% of all visitors. Thanks in no small part to the ready availability of cheap flights to Lanzarote with returns available from around £100 with operators such as Ryanair and easyJet.
All flights arrive at the islands only international airport – Arrecife. Which is located about 3km outside of the capital city of the same name. The airport is fairly welcoming and is split across two levels. With a small selection of shops, bars and restaurants.
First time visitors should be aware though that there are no bureau de change facilities here – although there are a couple of cash points. And no shuttle service connecting the airport with the main resorts of Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca. Making it imperative to book car hire in Lanzarote in advance or face lengthy queue for taxis.
Accommodation standards on the island are high. With about half of all visitors staying in one of the islands many excellent hotels. Some of which also offer all inclusive packages. Many tourists from the UK though prefer to book their own accommodation such as apartments and villas in Lanzarote direct online. So cutting out travel agents and tour operators altogether.
Lanzarote is an island that is well worth exploring. As there are lots of great beaches and plenty of picturesque villages to tour. Along with the many creations of a local artist called César Manrique. But the main tourist attraction is the Timanfaya National Park – home to over 300 volcanoes which erupted during the 1730´s. Creating a large lunar like area that is often likened to the moon.
